Opinion: Why Comparing President Donald Trump to Celebrities Doesn’t Make Sense

Celebrities have been quite outspoken about their negative feelings toward President Donald Trump. The defense of Trump sympathizers is to respond by drawing attention to things these celebrities have done and said. They point out roles they’ve played or materials they’ve written.

Ben Shapiro’s response to Stephen King’s tweet is the example that stands out in my mind, although, I have seen similar comments countless times.

Now, while I completely agree with Ben that this scene is disturbing and horrific but comparing a horror fiction writer to the leader of the free world is apples to oranges. I also took King’s tweet sarcastically. His mention of a “severely fucked-up mind,” to me, is like he’s also poking fun at himself by referencing the type of mind you’d have to channel to write books like his. I think this went way over Ben’s head. Comparing the man who wrote a fictitious book about a psychotic clown who preys on children to the man who represents the United States of America to the entire world is just asinine.

I have also seen mention of people who adore Hugh Hefner but don’t particularly like President Trump. Yes, Hugh Hefner created a men’s magazine that sexualized women. Yes, he’s had multiple young girlfriends at one time. Hugh Hefner, though, does not make decisions on behalf of the United States of America. Hugh is not the face and the voice of the U.S. Agreeably, Hugh Hefner would have had no place in politics. He was in the entertainment business and people adore him for his place in that particular industry. He is an entertainment icon. What most may not know is, he’s actually a veteran. He was in the Army from 1944 to 1946. While he didn’t spend much time in the military, he voluntarily joined before being honorably discharged. Which is more than we can say about President Trump who avoided the draft. Yes, I just threw a little shade. ūüėé

Now I’m going to tell you why I am so passionate about these apples to oranges comparisons. Celebrities do not make decisions about our healthcare. Stephen King’s books have zero impact on women’s reproductive rights. Hugh Hefner’s lifestyle has no impact on LGBTQ rights, although he was an advocate for the cause. Neither of them were or ever will be in charge of making decisions about immigration, armed forces, civil rights, the national budget and foreign affairs. The list could go on an on. We’re going to be much more strict on who we have in the oval office than we are on who’s books sit on the shelves of our bookstores and who’s lives we celebrate when they pass.

This comparison makes sense if we’re comparing celebrities to Donald Trump, the reality star, but once he swore in as the President of the United States, actually once he decided to run for office, he was no longer just an entertainer. He is our leader and he needs to represent us with class. He has yet to do so and I hope we continue to hold him accountable for his words and actions until he either changes or is removed from office.

Woman Crush Wednesday: Priyanka Chopra

I finally decided to watch Quantico after Hulu’s numerous attempts to automatically play it after any show I completed. Hulu was onto something, though, because I fell in love with the series. I finished both seasons in just a couple of weeks! There are a total of about 44 episodes and I flew through them.

The star of Quantico, Priyanka Chopra, is what sold it for me. I’ve watched her interviews on talk shows and have seen her absolutely kill it on the red carpet however, I just had to see her in action. I’m sure you’ve seen Priyanka while scrolling through your feeds or flicking through the channels but, here’s five reason why you should get to know her a little more.

The Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education

Through her foundation, she supports numerous third party foundations that focus on female children. It also offers support in education and health to underprivileged children. Priyanka donates 10% of her income to fund this foundation and pays for the educational and medical expenses of 70 children in India.

She doesn’t just stop there, she’s also worked for UNICEF since 2006, being appointed the global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador last December. In addition, Chopra is a Brand Ambassador for NDTV Greenathon, an organization that supports eco-friendliness. On top of all of that, she donated¬†‚āĻ5 million,¬†$78,000 USD, to¬†Nanavati hospital¬†to build a cancer ward named after her late father.

UNICEF's 70th Anniversary EventShe’s a writer

This one is near and dear, to me, as I love to write but her resume is impressive! She has written 50 columns for the¬†Hindustan Times.¬†¬†In August 2012, she wrote a column published in¬†The Times of India¬†titled “No woman in Mumbai feels safe any longer“, discussing the murder of 25-year-old Pallavi Purkayastha.¬†In a July 2014 article published in¬†The Guardian, she criticized¬†female genital mutilation¬†and¬†child marriage. Chopra wrote an op-ed for¬†The New York Times, in late 2014,¬†titled “What¬†Jane Austen¬†Knew” about the importance of education for girls. Around that same time,¬†she began writing a monthly column called “Pret-a-Priyanka” for “Elle.com”. In an article published in January 2015, she expressed her views on diversity and being a global citizen.

Priyanka doesn’t just write, she writes about subjects that matter and topics that diverse women like myself can relate to.

She had, hands down, the most creative Met Gala gown this year.

This dress was custom made for her by Ralph Lauren and she wore it so well. I don’t think anyone but her can pull off a trench coat look that extreme. She rocked an abbreviated version of it for the after party. (Look at that glorious top knot!)

priyanka-chopra_640x480_51493695245Priyanka-Chopra-Met-Gala-Afterparty-Dress-2017¬†She’s a singer

Seriously, what can’t Priyanka do? She had a hit single back in 2012 with Will.I.Am, “In My City!” It went 3x platinum and was the intro song to Thursday Night Football!

She’s an international award winner

Priyanka has starred in a long list of Indian and Bollywood films at the start of her career landing her nearly 30 awards from the¬†International Indian Film Academy,¬†Filmfare Awards, Kids’ Choice Awards, India,¬†National Film Awards, India,¬†Asian Film Awards,¬†Apsara Film Producers Guild Awards and many more. She also scored¬†two People’s Choice Awards in the U.S., Favorite Actress in a New TV Series in 2016 for her role as Alex Parrish in Quantico and¬†Favorite Dramatic TV Actress this year.

Priyanka Chopra is not only a gorgeous face. She is an activist, a philanthropist, a role model and an international superstar. She is both stunning and influential and that is why she is my #WCW! Not to mention she makes FBI gear look like the latest runway trend. Where can I cop this fit, though?

Strong Enough to Bear the Children Then Get Back to Business

Who run the world?

What a great time to be a woman! Women used to stay at home to take care of the children and house duties while the men worked. Nowadays, we do all of that and work a full-time job. In some households, the woman is even the breadwinner. Go us!

I was inspired by two girls on my son’s little league team to write this post. In last week’s game, Carly went against the coaches’ instructions both times she was up to bat, stole bases and scored the only two points our team had that day. You go girl! Later in the game, Paige got smacked in the head with a baseball, the coach yelled, “shake it off, Paige,” and that’s exactly what she did! She played the rest of the game while clearly being in pain. These girls out-shined the boys big time! Little MVPs!

These are just two small examples of how resilient women are. I’d like to celebrate us by listing five women who inspire me and who showcase what women’s empowerment really means.

Iskra Lawrence

Iskra Lawrence

Ms. Lawrence is shutting model stereotypes down. You don’t have to be thin to¬† be a supermodel and she is living proof. People are literally obsessed with her. I am one of those people! Iskra was dropped by her modeling agency for being “too big” and was told she was too small for plus-size modeling. Aerie snagged her for their “Real” Campaign and boy, did they hit the jackpot.

This woman is confident, fun and has quite the sense of humor. She posted a photo of herself on  instagram covered in snacks and indulging in a bag of potato chips. This photo slammed body shamers and inspired people who have been bullied about their weight. She also helped create the National Eating Disorders Association Inspires Seal of Approval campaign.

You can catch her on Insta looking fierce and dancing like nobody’s watching! Just follow her now and thank me later. ‚̧

Hillary Clinton

hillaryJust this month, Hillary became the first woman presumptive nominee for a major American political party. This is a big deal and whether you support her or not, we could have our first woman POTUS! This could be the first time we can use the term “First Husband”…or “First Man”…or whatever we decide to call Bill. She is about to go toe-to-toe with “The Donald” in debates where he is going degrade and belittle her and I have no doubt in my mind that she will take it like a champ and fire right back! #ImWithHer ‚̧

Lena Dunham

Actress, writer, director, producer and LEADER! Lena speaks out on any and all social issues that she feels passionate about. She does not hold back for anyone. She has touched on sexual assault, Planned Parenthood funding and women’s health, body image and equal rights for same-sex couples.

Her book, “Not That Kind of Girl,” talks about her experience of being sexually assaulted at her Alma Mater in my home state. Not cool, bro! Just this week, she posted a video on her twitter account dedicated to the survivor in the Standford case. She uses her role as a public figure to not only entertain us but to inform us and raise awareness. More celebrities should follow her lead! ūüėé

Gabby Douglas

She is the first African American woman in Olympic history to become the individual all-around champion and the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics as well as being the only American all-around champion to win multiple gold medals in a single Olympic Games. She is also the first female reigning Olympic all-around champion to return to the World Championships and medal in the all-around since Elena Davydova in 1981. (I literally copied all of that from Wikipedia because there’s just no other way to say it ūüėČ )

Sheesh! That’s a mouthful! With all of that being said, she still had other struggles that she powered through before achieving all that she has. She encountered racist bullying in one of the gyms she was a part of that made her almost stop competing all together. She clearly kept going and it paid off! Keep an eye out for her. She’ll be competing in this year’s Olympics.

Gina Rodriguez

oh my god

She’s basically my favorite person! She won Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Comedy back in 2014 for her role in Jane the Virgin. NBD!¬†What really makes her stand out, though, is her dedication to empowering women. She started the We Will Foundation, which is focused on funding arts education scholarships for less fortunate young women. In addition to that, every week she posts an image of a woman of Hispanic descent for #MovementMondays on her Instagram account. She highlights their accomplishments, why they inspire her and why we should pay more attention to them. She focuses on immigration reform, education and body image. She’s another super celebrity using her powers for good. I love it!

This list could literally go on and on so I had to stop at five! Continue to be inspired by other women and continue to be an inspiration to other women. This is our world, they just live in it ūüėõ !

Put on a show, ladies!

My Name is Daisha and I’m Addicted to Pop Culture…

…and I’m not looking for a cure!

There are countless things that factor into my obsession. Cracking open a new magazine and breathing in the sweet aroma of ink and perfume samples. Getting the feels every time I hear The OC theme song at the start of each episode. Watching a movie and shouting the name and filmography of every actor I recognize. Seriously, who even needs IMDB anymore? Want to know what Stassi and Scheana from Vanderpump Rules are up to? Ask me! I know because I follow them on Snapchat! I could go on and on, I live for this kind of stuff!

I’m not only entertained by it, I’m inspired by it. Celebrities influence my personal style and every day living. They are the speakers of their generations as they publicly stand up for things they believe in and bring more awareness to social issues than anyone else in the world. Fame comes with a lot of social responsibility and it’s admirable how well most of them handle it.

My addiction is what led me here. I’ve always enjoyed writing but I’m not interested in crafting a profound, fictional novel or a historical piece of American literature. I found that editorial writing is more my for forte. I just want to share the things I love with people who either have the same interests as me or want to learn more about things I’m knowledgeable in <3.

This blog is for people who love a good deal and frequently shop the clearance section. It’s for moms who need help balancing work, children and all of life’s little curve balls. It’s for the girly girls who can spend¬†hours learning how to perfect their eyebrow routine by watching the same YouTube tutorial over and over. It’s for my fellow binge watchers, ipsy subscribers and magazine isle regulars. My goal is to have a little bit of something for everyone ūüôā

I hope you’ll stay tuned <3.
